Singer's humorous debut interweaves a Las Vegas real estate showdown and a decades-running will-they-or-won't-they love story. Kurt Richter grew up lusting after the older Eugenie Zepp, whom he first met when he was eight. Now, they're 52 and 60, a real estate developer and agent, respectively, but the timing is as bad as ever. Kurt's neighbors are suing him over his plans to build high-rise condos in the neighborhood, and Eugenie's clients include some of the plaintiffs. Meanwhile, Kurt's ex-girlfriend Piper refuses to move out of his place, while Eugenie is pursuing the much-younger Chad, who looks like a "dollar-store John Cena." Added to the mix are Kurt's 21-year-old daughter, Brianna; Eugenie's aspiring professional poker player son, Austin; and Nellie, the nanny Kurt has employed for decades, who is hoping a pyramid scheme might be her ticket to leaving Vegas behind. As everyone works to keep Kurt and Eugenie apart, Kurt swears he's willing to do whatever big gesture Eugenie wants to win her heart, and that "this time, they would get their love story." The many characters converge in the satisfying ending, but the main event is Singer's apt depiction of the striving and sweltering Vegas, in all its calamity and glamour. This one's over the top in all the best ways.
