De historia naturali Insulæ Trinitatis MDCC-MMX: Three Centuries of Natural History on Trindade Island, Brazil, with Comments on Conservation

Publisher Description

Bilingual book in English and Brazilian Portuguese. The Trindade and Martin Vaz Archipelagos, Brazil, are relatively isolated in the South Atlantic. Up to the 20th Century, technical and scientific knowledge about Trindade was relatively scarce, consisting of weather data from the meteorological station of the Brazilian Navy, observations on the nesting of green turtles (Project TAMAR) and to some sporadic observations on geology, botany and zoology. This book compiles sources of scientific information about Trindade within a chronological sequence spanning three centuries. The slow advancement of scientific knowledge is narrated chronologically with emphasis on conservation. Over 160 sources of original natural history data (all we could find) are included and mostly commented. This book will prove a valuable tool to those who intend to conduct research on Trindade, especially in the fields of botany and zoology. Current day and historical photographs of local flora and fauna are included, pinpointing remarkable changes in vegetation over the last 100 years.
