Educational Issues and Controversy

Responding to Hess’ (2009) call to question the classroom and create more controversy in curriculum, an interdisciplinary team of students from Simon Fraser University researched and designed this interactive, multi-touch eBook. Each chapter offers a critical view of enduring issues such as: education for Canadian identity, student anxiety and mental heath, the pros and cons of educational technology, protecting the rights of social minorities in school, tools for building empathy and tolerance, SOGI education, the fight for music education, classroom discipline, physical activity in school, the challenges of standardized testing, teacher bias in grading, educational censorship, and the value and commodification of knowledge. Evocative and provocative, this text will inspire and challenge you to consider the implications of engaging K-12 students in discussions around controversial political issues in diverse democratic classroom contexts.
