Captured and betrayed – but by whom?
While April goes into early labour, Piers is kidnapped off the street by unknown enemies holding him for ransom. Worse, somehow his captors know Piers is incapable of identifying them. Untouchable, they plan to bleed him dry.
And April is in no immediate position to rescue him. Unable to ask for the help of friends or the law, and confined to childbed by well-meaning attendants and relations, she has to resort to escape in disguise. Even so, tracking down her missing husband in the hugeness of London is an impossible task. She needs luck as well as all her knowledge of the city's meanest streets.
Meanwhile, Piers, not knowing if his wife and child are even alive, struggles to find a way out of his prison. Blind to the faces of his captors, he has to rely on all his other senses to deduce and confront his betrayer.
And he's terribly afraid he has already run out of time.
