The Vril Society (Luminous Lodge) was a secret society of occultists in pre-Nazi Berlin. The Berlin Vril Society was in fact a kind of inner circle of the Thule Society and was in close contact with the British group known as the Golden Dawn. The Berlin Vril Society seemed to seek a connection with supernatural beings in the inner organs of the earth and its members practised techniques that would eventually improve their mastery of the sacred Vril energy and give them power over people and events. The term 'Vril' came to the attention of the Western world through the writings of the little-known French author Louis Jacorio (1837-1890). Jacolio was an avid reader of occult literature and was familiar with the writings of Swedenborg, the theosophist Jacob Boehme and Louis Claude de Saint-Martin. During his professional career, Jacolius served as court president in Chandernagore, India, and then as French consul in Calcutta. Giacolio's writings influenced many writers and occultists, including Rudyard Kipling and H.P. Blavatsky. Among Jacolius' many books are: La Bible dans l'Inde ou la Vie de Iezeus Christna (1859); Les Fils de Dieu (1873); Christna et le Christ (1874); Les Traditions indo-européennes (1876); La Genèse de l'humanité (1879); L'Olympe brahmanique (1881). The main theme of his books was that modern civilisation emerged from a single fundamental core, which was the same in India, West Asia and Europe. The Semitic and Indo-European peoples were initially no different, but in the process the Semitic peoples degenerated and the Aryan peoples remained pure. The Code of Manu, the law governing civilised man, was the name of the divine ruler in India, Menes in Egypt, Moses in Hebrew and Minos in Crete. According to Jacorio, Jesus Christ is only a recent reworking of the ancient Indo-Aryan tradition, namely that of Yesheus-Krishna. Jesus of Nazareth is only a different characterisation of the same person. In northern Europe, a magical civilisation called Thule has existed for thousands of years. The superior beings of Thule live in enormous caverns in the bowels of the earth. They possess a phenomenal source of magical power called Vril. The theme of Vril is much celebrated in most of Jacorio's writings. Vril is an energy latent in human beings, but humans only use a part of it. It is the source of divinity and the coming Superman. He who discovers it and masters its use will attain great power. He can become the ruler of man. In many of his writings, especially in Les Fils de Dieu and Les Traditions indo-européenes, Jacorio claims to have discovered the existence of the Vril in a certain sect in India. Jacorio's discovery of the Vril generated extraordinary interest among European intellectuals eager to learn about Eastern traditional wisdom. Inspired by his writings, the Rosicrucians in Berlin founded the Vril Society, which published the writings of the French masters at the end of the 19th century. The ideas of Jacobius were introduced in England at the Golden Dawn Society, of which S.L. Matthews was grand master. With the passage of time, the term Vril seems to have fallen into disuse. It was only when it was used again in the novel The Future Race, written by Baron Edward Bulwer-Lytton, with occult and prophetic overtones, that interest in Vril made a comeback. Brouwer-Lytton is a British writer and occultist, best known as the author of the bestseller The Last Days of Pompeii. In The Coming Race he describes the existence of a superhuman race of beings living in enormous caverns in the Earth's interior. This race has developed a powerful source of psychic energy, the Vril, which has made them comparable to the gods. Their plan is to one day dominate the Earth.
