Beautifully written and achingly raw, Hanya Yanagihara’s stirring novel features some of the most intensely real characters we’ve encountered. The story follows four close friends as they navigate the complex road from dorm life to adulthood in New York, slowly learning about the monstrous childhood abuse suffered by one of them—the brilliant but haunted lawyer Jude—that’s left him with wounds even lifelong friendship can’t heal. We were impressed by the sensitive way Yanagihara weaves Jude’s painful past into his troubled present, showing us just how manipulative and inhuman his abusers were and how tormented he is as a result. (Seriously, the anguished ways Jude expresses his lack of self-worth include some very extreme self-harm.) Actor Matt Bomer narrates Yanagihara’s heartrending story with ease, seamlessly shifting from the ironic levity shared by intimate friends to the existential pain of Jude’s long, dark night of the soul.
