Publisher Description
This beloved Newbery Medal-winning novel by bestselling author Katherine Paterson is a modern classic of friendship and loss.
Jess Aarons has been practicing all summer so he can be the fastest runner in the fifth grade. And he almost is, until the new girl in school, Leslie Burke, outpaces him. The two become fast friends and spend most days in the woods behind Leslie's house, where they invent an enchanted land called Terabithia. One morning, Leslie goes to Terabithia without Jess and a tragedy occurs. It will take the love of his family and the strength that Leslie has given him for Jess to be able to deal with his grief.
Bridge to Terabithia was also named an ALA Notable Children’s Book and has become a touchstone of children’s literature, as have many of Katherine Paterson’s other novels, including The Great Gilly Hopkins and Jacob Have I Loved.
Customer Reviews
It is so good
Thank you guys for making it. It helps my kids sleep. They listen to it every night whenever I don’t play it they just start crying and whenever they’re not listening to it and they’re like at sleepovers, I listen to it.
Enticing but disappointing
I had remembered this as a Narnia-like novel, but listening to it as an adult now it is loaded with shame-y and intolerance. Readers and listeners, if they don’t think about it may become biased these nuances. I stopped after the paper dolls…”These dolls are of colonial-era America. What’s wrong with them ? Nothing…” “Sometimes grandmothers just forget you’re growing up.” The body-shaming narrative and LGBTQ-shaming language was present as well. For ethical reasons, I can’t recommend it especially as not enough people widely discuss or recognize these criticisms.
