In Nico Walker’s debut novel, the path from bored college student to heroin-addicted bank robber is a straight shot. Cherry offers a searing portrait of modern America, introducing us to a nameless narrator who loses all interest in his studies and opts to join the army. It’s 2003, and this snap decision quickly finds him serving as a medic in the Iraq War and eventually coming home with PTSD. Walker’s antihero tries to keep his demons at bay via rapidly accelerating opiate use, which leaves him desperate enough to try anything to feed his addiction. Inspired by Walker’s own life story—he wrote this book while locked up in prison—this audiobook is both relatable and wildly entertaining. Narrator Jeremy Bobb’s breezy tone has the feeling of a friend spinning yarns over a few beers, even when he’s recounting the story’s most shockingly violent or fractured details. It’s no surprise that this dark and memorable story has been adapted into a movie (it stars Tom Holland!). Listen to the book before you watch it.
