Dolly Parton’s wonderful audiobook definitely lives up to her motto, “Leave no rhinestone unturned.” In this insightful memoir, Parton gives us the real stories behind decades of smart, beautiful, intriguing song lyrics. She dives deep into the ideas and writing process for many of her classics, from the touching childhood songs she wrote about a corncob doll, to the breakthrough smash “Jolene” (inspired by a bank teller who got too flirty with her husband!), to deeply personal songs that have never been heard before by the public. It’s hard to overstate the joy of diving into Dolly’s glittery world. Alternating between her own narration and clips from her songs, this audiobook is a wonderfully immersive experience. Her angelic voice is as bewitching as you’d imagine, making descriptions of all these sweet and important moments feel like a phone call with an old friend.
