ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR—Time, BBC Science Focus, The Daily Mail, Geographical, The Times, The Telegraph, New Statesman, London Evening Standard, Science Friday
When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave.
In the first edition of this mind-bending book, Sheldrake introduced us to this mysterious but massively diverse kingdom of life. This exquisitely designed volume, abridged from the original, features more than one hundred full-color images that bring the spectacular variety, strangeness, and beauty of fungi to life as never before.
Fungi throw our concepts of individuality and even intelligence into question. They are metabolic masters, earth makers, and key players in most of life’s processes. They can change our minds, heal our bodies, and even help us remediate environmental disaster. By examining fungi on their own terms, Sheldrake reveals how these extraordinary organisms—and our relationships with them—are changing our understanding of how life works.
Winner of the Wainwright Prize, the Royal Society Science Book Prize, and the Guild of Food Writers Award • Shortlisted for the British Book Award • Longlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
This enthralling scientific study about all things fungi is just as mind-altering as any magic mushroom. Biologist Merlin Sheldrake has always been captivated by the over two million species of fungi that exist on our planet, and he shares his discoveries in this fascinating book. We were amazed to discover how vital mushrooms are to everything from making bread and alcohol to cleaning up oil spills to controlling zombie ants—and even creating sustainable building materials. Throughout this wildly informative listen, Sheldrake is engaging and intriguingly philosophical. This particularly comes through in his enthusiastic narration, which infuses his words with energy and wonder. Fans of Robin Wall Kimmerer and Michael Pollan will love this exploration of the magical mysteries of fungi.

Beautifully written
This book is a beautiful, at times philosophical piece on life of the fungi as well as humankind. It had a powerful effect on me that I would describe as healing, or calming. I love learning about the different types of fungi, how essential they are to every other organism on this planet and also how they could be the one solution to the many crises we find ourselves in. Merlin’s narration is a perfect compliment to the tone of the book. I simply loved it!
This book decomposed my thoughts
It’s easy to think we have an understanding of life if we just listen to what we are taught without thinking deeper into it. This book really has decomposed how I think and see the world. As a body worker I have incorporated what this book has taught me into my massages. I often think of my arms and hands as being the mycelium, reaching out to heal the body on the table. I think of my thoughts connecting with their thoughts and providing a healing energy. Since I have incorporated this visualization into my treatments the positive feedback I get from people is incredible. I also take my daughters foraging for mushrooms on our hikes. We see the forest differently now.
Thank you Merlin
