Publisher Description

The star and creative force behind Mr. Show and Arrested Development pens his "first and final book, chronicling his meteoric rise and abysmal fall in the literary world."

After a decade spent in isolation in the Ugandan jungles thinking about stuff, David Cross has written his first book. Known for roles on the small screen such as "never-nude" Tobias Funke on Arrested Development and the role of "David" in Mr. Show with Bob and David, as well as a hugely successful stand-up routine full of sharp-tongued rants and rages, Cross has carved out his place in American comedy. Whether deflating the pomposity of religious figures, calling out the pathetic symbiosis of pseudo-celebrity and its leaching fandom, or merely pushing the buttons of the way-too-easily offended PC left or the caustic, double standard of the callous (but funnier) right, Cross has something to say about everyone, including his own ridiculous self.

Now, for the first time, Cross is weaving his media mockery, celebrity denunciation, religious commentary, and sheer madness into book form, revealing the true story behind his almost existential distaste of Jim Belushi ("The Belush"), disclosing the up-to-now unpublished minutes to a meeting of Fox television network executives, and offering up a brutally grotesque run-in with Bill O'Reilly. And as if this wasn't enough for your laughing pleasure in these troubled times, some of the pieces splinter off with additional material being created online in exclusive video and animated web content created solely for the book - a historical first (presumably)!

With a mix of personal essays, satirical fiction posing as truth, advice for rich people, information from America's least favorite Rabbi and a top-10 list of top-10 lists, I Drink for a Reason is as unique as the comedian himself, and cannot be missed.

ShaGster Shan ,

SIx hours at work, easly helped by six hours of David Cross.

A hilarious collection of stories, articles, emails and anecdotes, presented in a sometimes surreal past/present/future jumble. Some of the act break content goes on a little long, but the package as a whole is definitely worth a listen, especially if you enjoy his standup.

Great book

One of the smartest, funniest books I've ever read. And I have read over thirty three books.

6.5 hours of more David Cross

Being a fan of David Cross on all fronts, stand up, Mr. Show, Arrested Development, Todd Margaret etc I thought this audiobook would be the perfect DC companion and I was right. More like an extended long drawn out version of his stand up (but in a good way) than a real memoir, Cross manages to be entertaining throughout. Unfortunately anyone looking for a real window into Cross' upbringing or tales from past professional & personal relationships, shows etc. will be disappointed that he touches on his personal life only rarely (a letter about a terrible breakup which hits close to home, a couple of vague caustic remarks about an irresponsible father) which only whets the appetite for an actual memoir that deals with the reason(s) why he drinks, as I'm certain Jim Belushi and Cigar magazine articles aren't entirely to blame.

There are a few bits that go on far too long such as the band that plays an entire song dedicated to his ideas for some new story concepts in Hollywood and the robot voice that reads a blog dedicated to bashing Cross (it's just hard to hear). Cross obviously detests the absurdity of Cigar Aficionado magazines as much as I do, and you'll get the impression that he believes certain comedians and actors aren't worth their bloated pay checks and/or celeb status. Near the end, you'll be treated to a few blog postings and articles that Cross previously posted and it comes off as padded filler. They are entertaining pieces, but it seemed like he ran out of ideas and thought "Hey, I can read these things I already wrote years ago which would leave me more time for Halo 3. So it's win win!"

If you're a fan of his work, you will be treated to 6.5 hours of David which for many of us, is time well spent. My only real complaint is that at the end you'll know that Cross thinks some stuff and people are extremely grating, annoying, obnoxious and worthy of scorn, but you already knew that. I wanted to know the REAL reasons that drive Cross to drink, not minor annoyances (real and imagined)...and there is obviously much more under the surface that we may never be privy to, until his inevitable bio-pic that is.

I only wish he had written an ACTUAL book, because I prefer reading and it's taken me about 4 months to type it out so I can enjoy his spoken word in written form. What? This is an audiobook of a REAL book with words? Oh Crap!
