APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
We loved the exciting mix of modern attitudes and magical world-building in this slow-burn romantasy from the prolific author Rachel Howzell Hall. When Kai wakes up in the woods near the kingdom of Vinevridth, she has complete amnesia about her surroundings and herself. But there are clues that she’s an unusual person, like her unique eyes, her striking amulet…and her ability to read minds. We loved the refreshingly modern, quippy style of Kai’s inner monologue juxtaposed with the novel’s traditional, medieval-esque fantasy setting. Things get intense when Kai realizes the kingdom is under threat from sinister outside forces, and they really kick into high gear when she begrudgingly teams up with the rude but highly skilled fighter Jadon—whose true feelings for her aren’t as secret as he thinks they are, thanks to Kai’s psychic abilities. Narrator Tamika Katon-Donegal embodies Kai’s sardonic wit so perfectly, we never wanted to leave her world full of strange creatures and dark, fascinating possibilities.
