APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
If you love Bram Stoker’s Dracula but not how its female characters are reduced to victims, Dawn Kurtagich’s brilliant update is for you. Dr. Mina Murray, a respected psychiatrist hiding fairly severe symptoms of PTSD, must confront her dark past and the small Welsh town she fled years ago after her former best friend sends a desperate, incoherent email complaining of a mysterious medical condition. Turns out the illness may be linked to the disappearances of several young women as well as Mina’s new bug-eating patient in London. Can this sinister threat be stopped before it claims more victims? Delicate and mannered, narrator Imogen Church captures the voice of a woman who has established a fierce but brittle control over the pain and fear that still seethes within her. Snippets of the musical Welsh language interspersed with the English dialogue add lovely accents to the listening experience. This suspenseful supernatural thriller is also a sensitive exploration of a woman’s trauma.
