Publisher Description
Winner of Oprah's first "Chutzpah Award" for boldness, Irshad Manji is among the world's most visible - and vocal - Muslim reformers. In this audiobook, narrated by her, Irshad explains the disturbing attitudes with which too many of her fellow Muslims practice Islam today: Arab cultural tribalism posing as pure faith. An uncritical approach to the Quran as the final and therefore superior word of God. And a rejection of universal human rights as if they are incompatible with the Divine.
As a faithful Muslim, Irshad shows that Islam has the raw material to rectify these injustices. Irshad offers a practical vision of how reform-minded Muslim can empower women, promote respect for religious minorities and foster a competition of ideas. This vision builds on "ijtihad" (ij-tee-had), Islam's lost tradition of independent thinking. Irshad Manji's message for Muslims and non-Muslims? Dare to ask questions - out loud. In this audiobook, her voice rings clearly, compassionately, and passionately. You will love the musical surprises, too!

An opportunity to explore faith with the author
Having the author read the book is akin to sitting in her kitchen with a cup of chai tea and have a philosophical chat. Irshad Manji takes us on her journey as a Muslim women to understand more fully the religion in which she was raised. As a young girl she regularly questioned "why is that so?" and thankfully for us she has never stopped asking. Manji walks us through her inquisitive youth when she was expelled from her madrassa for challenging the patriarchal authority and into the start of her young journalistic career. She discusses her inability to reconcile the ancient traditions of Islam and the pluralistic thinking of Western society. Throughout this book, the reader is asked, through Manji's open letter dialogue, to consider faith versus fact and common sense versus common dogma. Can religion survive today's globalization? Or are the faithful doomed to a life mandated by tribal customs and heritage? I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to gain insight into the potential that religions as a whole might bring to our societies today, not merely those of Muslim faith.
The truth
Whatever she said about Islam comes from her child abuse when she was little and her hatred that she built upon it, she speak ill about Islam without even talking about the real Islam she define Islam as she might see or learn from her Islamic school as one single school, she should define Islam as what the prophet of that religion said not taking what she want and leaving the other. About the same sex marriage or homosexuality is NOT allowed in most religions in the world and it is for human being present and future sake and benefits. And about the Islamic history I agree somehow about some leaders act in the name of God for themselves but in comparison with western colonization Islamic history is much better and more open to others, when the powerful western country invade the the world what did they do? READ history to know. And ask yourself question why Islamic open last for along time since the time of the prophet until 1924 civilization after civilization powerful Islamic country one after another while western colonization DIDNT last... Because it built on unfairness and oppression and greediness. Her book is not fair but thanks to her as she share her thoughts with the world so we can discusse.
