About the author
Tamara Goranson holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology as well as Adjunct Professor status at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. She published several academic pieces before she turned to writing short stories, creative non-fiction, and historical fiction, winning 3rd prize in the 2019 Vancouver Island Writers’ Association annual general contest for her nonfiction piece, ‘A Voice in Time’. She lives in Victoria with her husband and two daughters.

Nothing but misery and torture-p0rn
Oh boy, this book was not an enjoyable read. It wasn’t even cathartic, as someone who has experienced abuse myself. It was just miserable. The entirety of Part 1 is genuinely nothing but beatings, emotional abuse, and marital rape, and a big chunk of Part 2 is as well. The rest of Part 2 is mostly the main character being racist and ungrateful and getting herself severely injured in a blizzard. And once the main character gets over her racist and selfish attitude, and finally the story is not miserable any more, the last two chapters of the book decide, nah, this is most definitely *not* a story about a woman escaping her abuser and the marks he made on her, physically and mentally, and being able to grow into a person who can find connection and community and love. Nope. This is a story where the abuser wins.
Also served with a large helping of homophobia/biphobia from our main character.
I will be returning this book if I can. If you’re someone who enjoyed The Silence of the Girls, you’d probably enjoy this. I hated both of them. I like my reimaginings to be more than just torture p0rn.
