Dedra has a secret. She can escape this world - and her unhappy life - by slipping through the veil between worlds to visit Ahwey, where music is visible and underlays every aspect of life. As a violin prodigy and traveler, she's accorded a high status; she's in love (even if she doesn't know it); she's happiest there and dreams of staying in that world forever.
