The sixtyish Cuban American had a hard life before making it big as a stand-up comedian and podcast host, and he’s open about all of it in this spellbinding memoir. From his childhood in the ’70s as a Cuban refugee living in a world of guns and drugs in New Jersey to his early attempts at busting into stand-up in the cocaine-fuelled ’80s, Tremendous is filled with hilarious and often dark stories. So much so that by the time Diaz gets to his later-in-life success as a comedian, actor, and host of the hit podcast Uncle Joey’s Joint, it’s all the sweeter. Finally, the life of Uncle Joey put in a well organized manner. Over the years, the stories have piled up and even though they are tremendous on their own, having them written in a linear storyline makes it all make much more sense. It’s a more extensive experience reading from start to finish, experiencing the terrible, the bad and the ugly of his childhood, and his complete nuclear bomb of a life, to eventually get to where he is today and how even though he was in a downward spiral down at the bottom, he touched the bottom, built a house in it, built a ladder and eventually came out.
