As the pressure mounts and the temptation of booze calls like a siren, Martina digs into the mystery and discovers many of the threads have razor-sharp ends. And forced to partner with a resentful detective investigating a linked suspicious death, the haunted private eye unravels clues that delve deep into her past… and put her in a dark and dangerous corner.

Poorly Written and Hard to listen to

The bones of the story are decent, but the 'family secret' is quite predictable from the start, leaving me uncertain if that was intentional.

There are many better mystery books available, and I would recommend passing on this one.

Unfortunately, the book has some glaring issues. First, the writing is clunky, especially in the dialogue. The author features a 7-year-old girl who speaks in overly formal, stilted, and grammatically correct sentences, which is unrealistic for a child. This broke the immersion for me every time she appeared. I'm surprised an editor didn't address this more thoroughly.

Second, the audiobook narrator was poorly chosen. I've never heard a more monotone voice narrate a book. At first, I thought the character was meant to sound depressed, but the narration didn't match the text.

This isn't a bad attempt if this is the author's first novel, but it leaves much to be desired.
