Publisher Description
When an early morning call brings Deputy Ben Packard to the scene of a home invasion, he finds Bill Sandersen shot in his bed. Bill was a well-liked local who chased easy money his whole life, leaving bad debts and broken hearts in his wake. Everyone Packard talks to has a story about Bill, but no one has a clear motive for wanting him dead. The business partner. The ex-wife. The current wife. The high-stakes poker buddies. Any of them?or none of them?could be guilty. As the investigation begins, tragedy strikes the Sheriff's department, forcing Packard to make a difficult choice about his future: step down as acting Sheriff and pursue the quiet life he came to Sandy Lake in search of or subject himself to the scrutiny of an election for the full-time role of Sheriff, a job he's not sure he wants. There's a hidden history to Sandy Lake that Packard, ever the outsider, can't see. Bad blood and old secrets run deep. But an attempt on Packard's life means he's getting uncomfortably close to the dangerous legacy of the quiet Minnesota town. And someone will do anything to keep it hidden.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
One man’s murder digs up more intrigue than a small town can handle in this gripping procedural. When local businessman Bill Sandersen is found murdered, deputy sheriff Ben Packard has got no shortage of suspects or motives to comb through. Bill stole from his now-ex business partner and owed money to his gambling buddies. Then there’s Bill’s wife, Carrie, and his ex-wife, Sherri—her sister. We loved sorting through the puzzle pieces in this slow-burn whodunit, but we became just as obsessed with Ben’s own issues (not to mention his adorable three-legged corgi). As the smart, instinctive acting sheriff of Sandy Lake, Minnesota, he’s the logical choice to run for the office during the next election. But as an out gay man with a local mystery buried in his past, there are people in this conservative small town who don’t want to see him succeed. Author Joshua Moehling builds a messy, high-stakes tangle of sordid secrets, rural politics, and county corruption, and narrator Linda Jones knows just how to up the tension without sacrificing her cool, film noir vibe. Even if you missed the prior Ben Packard mystery, And There He Kept Her, this is a great place to start the series.
