A Bump on the Road is a book of short stories emanating from the innocent years before secondary school, and the growing out of it. A Bump on the Road reflects an observant child in Strabane, Lifford and Derry, in the North West of Ireland attempting to understand the world around him. The reader is taken on a gamut of emotions in this rich and amusing journey of growing up in Ireland, brought evocatively to life by his wonderment of every day life - snow, holidays, playing in the street, family, school, church and gradually moving away. Sorrow is never too far away.The extended family of parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and the wider community of the Church, the Troubles, family secrets, ghost stories, leaving home, myths and legends, all this comes under the microscope of a child growing up. These stories are based on reality - disguised memoirs – creative memoirs. Little nuggets of memories give birth to some flights of fancies.

Hugh Vaughan was born in Strabane, spending his teenage years in 1970s Derry, Ireland at the height of the Troubles. Currently retired, travelling the world when not living in Melbourne, Australia. He lectured and worked in Information Technology in Northern Ireland, Wellington, New Zealand, Sydney & Melbourne, Australia.
