As John Schuyler and his neighbor report a $4,281.73 dividend to a widow, a woman lies dying in a Breton hut—and hoofbeats stop outside her door.

On a quieter Fifth Avenue, three neighboring homes shelter families whose lives are bound by affection, loss and a little neighborly discretion. John Stuyvesant Schuyler is upright, serious and prosperous, a man whose carefully tended inheritance seems to have left him little to fear.
