Book Three: A ROGUE TO RUIN
Anne Pemberton was one of the Season’s most popular young misses until her betrothed was arrested for extortion at their wedding. Now a social pariah, she can’t help but think back to the dashing gentleman she met before the Season started. Though they spent several afternoons exploring East London together, they never disclosed their names. They did, however, share a kiss, and Anne can’t forget it—or him.
Former thief Rafe Blackwell is now a respectable gentleman with one goal: to take down the man who murdered his parents. Reunited with Anne, their attraction still blazes strong, and he can’t let her get too close, for his heart is forever cold and his mission too desperate. But when Anne seeks to save him—both emotionally and physically—he’ll have to embrace the darkness or risk losing the only light he’s ever known.

My favourite of the series
I received an ARC of this book to read through a reading group. All opinions are my own.
A Rogue to Ruin is the third book in Darcy Burke’s delightful The Pretenders series and one I’ve been waiting to read because the character of Rafe Blackwell intrigued me. He’s one of those dark heroes with lots of layers to unwrap. I advise reading the series in order as there is a mystery running through it and it’s resolved in this book. The heroine Anne Pemberton is spunky, adventurous, not afraid to ask for what she wants, as well as being kind and intelligent. The trope is friends to lovers with a mystery to be solved, lots of adventure, a nasty villain and friends and family that have your back. I enjoyed this book immensely and highly recommend reading it. Steam Level: Medium. Publishing Date: February 23, 2021. #ARogueToRuin #DarcyBurke #HistoricalRomance #HistoricalRomanceSeries #bookstagram #bookstagrammer
I could not gobble this book down fast enough
I could not gobble this book down fast enough. All the tantalizing little hints about what was truly going on that we’d uncovered in previous volumes of the series, finally come into full light. And I was desperate to see how they’d all play out; what it would take to get the happy ever after I longed to see. It felt to me that Rafe’s story is told through moments of self-discovery. Even his relationship with Anne is about learning to love himself in spite of, possibly even because of, the choices of his past. Anne’s journey is also about discovery, but more about the people around her than herself. I loved where this story took us, and adored the way it ends. However, I hate that the series is over and I have to say “goodbye” to these characters now.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book through NetGalley.
