A Wild Surmise

In 1853 Darien Adair joins an expedition to discover a route for the first canal to cross the Isthmus of Panama and unite the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. As an accomplished artist, his job is to visually document the party’s progress; but he soon finds himself locked in a battle of wills with Lieutenant Isaac Strain, leader of the group, a man irrationally driven to grasp a long-sought, as yet elusive success and fame. Darien must fight to save the lives of himself and his comrades in one of the most dangerous environments on earth, where disease, starvation and death inexorably wear away the thin veneer of civilization.
