Unhappy with his life of two failed marriages, no children and no job satisfaction, Andy Shepstone is invited to interview an alien. He is a trusted war correspondent and ex covert ops specialist.

The interview makes him sympathise with the alien. He is disgusted with the way it has been treated. It is an apparently sexless marsupial named Naomran who reproduces by ritual meditation.

He fears for its life and also believes it to be female. With her help and unexpected abilities, he succeeds in rescuing her. They escape in her spacecraft and visit a friend of his for supplies.

On her world, he tries to fit in by co-operating with the Elders and their appointed agent, the doctor Lalunith. Andy inadvertently threatens to disrupt the social order and stability of this peaceful planet.
