Alby and Me

Alby and Me is a powerful and poignant evocation of the friendship of two very different boys growing up on a tough English housing estate in the late 1940s.

Set against a background of family strife, it is a gritty, compelling, often humorous, account of a critical period in the boysí lives as they encounter bullies, sexually savvy girls, a suicide, some vintage working class characters, and God.

It is a story touched by both joy and sadness, and has an ending many may find hard to forget.


Alby and Me was long-listed for the prestigious Waverton Good Read Award for the best debut novel of 2007-08.


THE  AUTHOR

John C Bird has been a journalist, PR man and university lecturer, living and working in the United States, Canada, Cyprus and the United Kingdom. His previously published and broadcast work includes plays, poetry, short stories, television comedy material, and non-fiction books on subjects as diverse as careers for the over-40s and Britainís treatment of enemy alien civilians in wartime.
