In February 1893, the S.S. Naronic departs Liverpool bound for New York City. The vessel vanishes and is never heard from again. Ten years later, the New York City Police Department receives a letter indicating that an "infernal machine" or bomb is about to be loaded aboard an outbound British liner. As police agencies race to avert a disaster that could endanger hundreds of innocent lives the enigmatic suspect slips into the shadows of the bustling metropolis.
