Publisher Description
Edward Payson Roe (March 7, 1838 – July 19, 1888) is an American writer, priest and pastor. Edward Payson Roe was born in Moodna, Orange County, New York. He studied at Williams College and at Auburn Theological Seminary. During the American Civil War, he wrote articles for newspapers and then lectured about the war and wrote for periodicals. At the time, he was a very popular novelist, especially among middle-class people. His novels have been translated into several European languages.
The main purpose of that story was to show the power of a young girl who was not so beautiful or so good as her sisters. She was rather commonplace at first, but occasions led her to make efforts to be true to her own nature and conscience and to adopt a simple way of life. She achieved no wonderful success, nothing beyond the ability of varieties like herself.
