Publisher Description

The story behind the birth of punk rock in the UK and the motley crew of misfits and malcontents who ignited what became a national and international sensation.

The Sex Pistols’ debut single, “Anarchy in the UK” exploded on a largely unsuspecting music world fifty years ago this year, in November 1976. No record in rock history has more emphatically defined its era, and a whole musical genre. Nothing was the same after that.

But it didn’t come out of nowhere. If 1977 would be the “Year of Punk,” then 1976 was “Year Zero,” when it all began. Clinton Heylin charts punk’s formative months with precision, flair, and wit, drawing on a host of eyewitness accounts to show how a handful of young mavericks tapped into a mood of disaffection and iconoclasm and birthed a movement.

Many of those who experienced the shock of the Sex Pistols’ early live performances, even before their notorious Anarchy in the UK tour, were inspired to form their own bands – the Clash, the Damned, Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and more – and they too would have a lasting impact on the music of the following decades. It all started in Year Zero.
