No one understood the cost paid by Unicorn Elder, Astha, as he had walked away from everyone he had loved a long time ago, convinced that Zylee was wrong and the Shield would return one day. His paths have brought him to many creatures and more Wisdoms than he thought possible, discovering answers, potential and possibilities. And the greatest of possibilities rests in Windwhistler, a young unicorn desperate to prove his worth and his standing in the clans.

When Windwhistler meets the Shield of Abanthes he is convinced he will be stronger than any creature it has ever met. He was wrong; the Shield has wanted him for a long time and no creature or action will be allowed to interfere; the shadows have taken Carissa, separating the Humans and stopping the Decree. He is a prisoner of the Shield and no one can trust what he will do, or who he will hurt, when they meet again.

Astha is determined to protect Windwhistler and his co-walkers and reach the Caves of Littor before Parvenu, convinced that Windwhistler has a destiny beyond the Shield and Zylee.
