Publisher Description

“People laugh at me because I use big words. But if you have big ideas you have to use big words to express them, haven’t you?”
Meet Anne Shirley. Anne has great powers of imagination, fed by books of poetry and romance, and a passion for "romantic" and beautiful names and places. When aging brother and sister Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help with chores around their farm, Green Gables on Prince Edward Island, neither is prepared for the feisty and imaginative redheaded girl who is mistakenly brought to them instead. Nor are they prepared for the way in which she will change their lives. Through a series of hilarious misadventures, Anne's uncompromising spirit makes her a striking presence in the close-knit village, bringing new friendships, first crushes, and, for her foster parents, a love and openness unimaginable before her arrival.
"'Anne of Green Gables' is worth a thousand of the problem stories with which the bookstores are crowded to-day, and we venture the opinion that this simple story of rural life in Canada will be read and reread when many of the more pretentious stories are all forgotten. There is not a dull page in the whole volume …” – Globe (Toronto)
Lucy Maud Montgomery was a Canadian author best known for her series of Anne novels beginning in 1908 with Anne of Green Gables. The book was an immediate success. The character of Anne Shirley made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and garnered her an international following. Montgomery went on to publish 20 novels, 530 short stories, 500 poems, and 30 essays. Despite the fact that Montgomery published over twenty books, she never felt she “achieved [her] one great book”. Readers, however, have always found her characters and stories to be among the best in fiction. Mark Twain said Anne was “the dearest and most moving and delightful child since the immortal Alice”. Montgomery was honoured by being the first female in Canada to be named a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in England and by being invested in the Order of the British Empire in 1935.
