In Anthropomorphosis, by playwright and author Stephen Evans, a post-divorce road trip is transformed into a transcendental adventure through the wilds and wastelands of the American West.

Evans' Call to Adventure takes the form of the movie Contact, based on the novel by Carl Sagan. But the author is not going in search of aliens ("necessarily"), but a book of his own.

Following US Route I-90 from Minneapolis to Yellowstone and then circling home, the author chronicles his often humorous encounters with amazing and inspiring sites along the way, including Pipestone Monument, The Badlands, Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, and more. 

At critical junctures along the way, the journey is informed by nightly reading of five essays by Ralph Waldo Emerson (Self-Reliance, The Poet, Experience, Nature, and Circles), creating meandering yet somehow synergistic outer and inner journeys.

The book that results is not the one the author set out to write. Instead, Anthropomorphosis examines our capacity for comprehending the marvelous world around us, our place in it, and the path to future understanding.
