Archeological Expedition to Arizona in 1895

Jesse Walter Fewkes was born on November 14, 1850, in Newton Massachusetts. He was an American anthropologist, archeologist and naturalist. He was a trained zoologist at the Harvard University. He was an American anthropologist, archaeologist, writer and naturalist. Later in his life, he turned to ethological studies of the native tribes in the southwest of America.

At the end of the May, 1895, Fewkes was asked to make a collection of objects for the National Museum, through which he would illustrate the archeology of the Southwest, focusing on the phase of pueblo life and the cliff houses.

So, he went on the expedition to Arizona and stayed there for about three months, collection a big number of items. The main object of the expedition was to collect specimens from Arizona.

After his return, he was asked to prepare a preliminary account of his work and what he had found on the expedition. That account turned into something way bigger, resulting in this long essay or book if you would like to call it.

This book gives an overview of the expedition Fewkes went to and an exhaustive discussion of the results of his work.

Apart from the “story” of the expedition, you will find many beautiful drawings of an incredible pottery uncovered from the Tusayan sands and of many other items found there.
