Lois McMaster Bujold was born in 1949, the daughter of an engineering professor at Ohio State University, from whom she picked up her early interest in science fiction. She now lives in Minneapolis, and has two grown children. She began writing with the aim of professional publication in 1982. She wrote three novels in three years; in October of 1985, all three sold to Baen Books, launching her career. Bujold went on to write many other books for Baen, mostly featuring her popular character Miles Naismith Vorkosigan, his family, friends, and enemies. Her books have been translated into over twenty languages. Her fantasy from Eos includes the award-winning Chalion series and the Sharing Knife series. In 2020, Bujold received the Damon Knight Grand Master Memorial Award from the Science Fiction Writers of America.
Customer Reviews
A Classic. And I really mean that.
Bujold can write breathless action, labyrinthine politics, sparkling conversation, and the most engaging characters in all of science fiction. The Vorkosigan series is the ultimate example of that. Miles usually captures all the glory - exactly as planned - but this book, like the first (“Cordelia”, which appears to be out of print) remind us where all that character, genius, charm, and mischief came from. Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan is one of the greatest women in literature. She is one in many billions, yet so real, you want to be her friend. Aral is her perfect match, a real man in all the most complimentary ways I can imagine. Having read the whole series (over and over and over), I know that Miles is the only son they could have had - heart-breaking, mind-boggling and side-splitting - and it leaves you wondering what they did to deserve him — again, in every sense of the term.
Ms. Bujold, I believe Ms. Heyerdahl would have loved your books. I know I do, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the Vorkosigan, their friends and family and retainers and even enemies.
