Although school in Bartolinia is compulsory throughout the entire year, the elf Bo dreams of adventures far beyond the classroom and the strictly regulated life of elves. He is especially fascinated by the stulti, as the Bartolini call humans, even though any contact with them is strictly forbidden. Instead of devoting himself to the study of botany, Bo skips classes and joins elves who have long since left school behind. Yet no one has ever impressed him as much as Luka, the son of a stulti on whose farm Bo's family lives. When Bo's father discovers this friendship, he is horrified, for it is considered a threat to all of Bartolinia. Bo then makes a rash decision: he flees to the sea to become a sailor. While he wanders across the oceans, an unprecedented danger rises over Bartolinia. Greedy investors plan to destroy the mulberry forest where the goddess Natura lives. With her disappearance, the world of the elves would vanish as well. But Bo soon realizes that his place is not on the sea, but in the vastness of the Pannonian Plain. With Luka's help, he begins the fight against the foreign investors who, out of pure greed, disregard nature. Saved at the very last moment, Natura grants the young elf something unique as a sign of gratitude. And so, after countless centuries, Bo becomes the first elf with wings—a symbol of hope, courage, and the friendship between humans and nature.
