As he says in his preface, Kerst noticed that although a lot had been written about Beethoven by other people, many of the man's own words were not easily accessible to the public. What makes this book uniquely valuable to a student of Beethoven is the way Kerst reveals Beethoven's character through the composer's own writings, organized into 13 categories. Categories include his thoughts on God, composition, his own works, art, nature and more.
