Bypass Surgery

Not that long ago, little could be done when a blocked or severely narrowed coronary artery cut off blood flow to part of the heart. Coronary arteries are key blood vessels that supply the heart muscle with the oxygen and nutrients it needs to do its job—steadily contracting and relaxing about once a second. It wasn't until 1960 that doctors performed the first operation to bypass a blocked coronary artery and restore normal blood flow to the heart.
