Chasing warm weather on their way to Los Angeles, Lizzy and Holly stop in the small town of Serenity, Texas. Leisurely days spent hiking and playing in the pool are just what they need after an arsonist burns Holly's animal clinic to the ground. And Lizzy's invitation to speak at a major writer's convention is what she needs to conquer the fear that sent her into hiding.

What begins as a series of warm, domestic moments—shared campfire breakfasts, heartfelt conversations, and quirky escapades—gradually turns into a dangerous labyrinth of blackmail, betrayal, and murder.

Through it all, Lizzy's spunky miniature dachshund, Mavis unearths clues and sniffs out danger in the most unpredictable ways.

The constantly shifting boundary between everyday life and illegal activity forces them to confront not only external threats but also inner turmoil. Loyalty, resilience, and determination are put to the test as they struggle to maintain a semblance of normalcy in a fractured community.
