However, life is not perpetually bleak and throughout the novel there are moments of hope and joy: Cari's birth father convinced even after so many years that his daughter is still alive - somewhere, the happy reunion of the killer's own daughter and his son, the power of friendship and an unexpected romance blossoming between this young man and the girl from the homeless refuge befriended by his sister. It is a fast moving dramatic story told in powerful short chapters with 'cliff -hanging' and sometimes unexpected endings.
