APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
After so many incarnations of James Bond, it was a delight to go back to Ian Fleming’s original 007 novel. 1953’s Casino Royale follows the quintessential spy on a mission to intercept a Russian agent in Northern France—and portrays a Bond who has more depth, vulnerability and range than his big-screen descendants. For today's reader, there’s an undeniable Mad Menesque thrill in the midcentury details (including our hero’s penchant for combining champagne with motorsports). Ultimately, it’s the breakneck pace of the plot—packed with action and romance—that makes Casino Royale a pulpy success.
