Castlevania, known in Japan as Akumajou Dracula (roughly translated as "Demon Castle Dracula"), is a game developed by Konami for the Famicom Disc System in Japan in September 1986. In May 1987 , it was converted to cartridge format and released in North America for NES followed by a version released in Europe in 1988, and then again in Japan in 1993. This is the first game first in Castlevania franchise, but the seventh version of the franchise in current canon.

Castlevania is a typical platform game of the 8-bit era: the game consists of six levels, played in a strict linear process. The player controls Simon Belmont, whose main attack mode is through his whip, which can be upgraded by obtaining special items during the game. In addition, many different "secondary weapons" can be obtained providing different attack methods. By breaking candles, torches and fake walls throughout the castle, Simon collects hearts, which can then be used to activate any of the extra weapons he owned at the time. Simon can only carry one extra weapon at a time. Each of Castlevania's six levels ends with a boss battle: these bosses are often taken from literary or horror legends, and include Monsters, Medusa and Frankenstein's Death.
