Publisher Description

The memoir of a high-functioning, law-abiding (well, mostly) sociopath and a roadmap—right from the source—for dealing with the sociopath in your life.

“[A] gripping and important book . . . revelatory . . . quite the memorable roller coaster ride.”—The New York Times Book Review

As M.E. Thomas says of her fellow sociopaths, “We are your neighbors, your coworkers, and quite possibly the people closest to you: lovers, family, friends. Our risk-seeking behavior and general fearlessness are thrilling, our glibness and charm alluring. Our often quick wit and outside-the-box thinking make us appear intelligent—even brilliant. We climb the corporate ladder faster than the rest, and appear to have limitless self-confidence. Who are we? We are highly successful, noncriminal sociopaths and we comprise 4 percent of the American population.”

Confessions of a Sociopath—part confessional memoir, part primer for the curious—takes readers on a journey into the mind of a sociopath, revealing what makes them tick while debunking myths about sociopathy and offering a road map for dealing with the sociopaths in your life. M. E. Thomas draws from her own experiences as a diagnosed sociopath; her popular blog, Sociopathworld; and scientific literature to unveil for the very first time these men and women who are “hiding in plain sight.”

Fascinating !

Shame on the people who rated this book poorly because they did not like the person the author authentically revealed herself to be. Despite their obvious hypocrisy, these people apparently feel morally superior to the author. Oh the irony !

If you want an honest look into the mind and life experience of a sociopath, past the practically universally inaccurate stereotypes, this is book will provide that.

Most striking I find is the theme of fear the author has about the potential consequences on her life, career, etc if she is "outed" as a sociopath.

I have some good friends that also fear people finding out that they are homosexuals, even married to same sex partners (I live in Canada).

No wonder the author sees her book primarily as a way of advocating that society be more open minded about sociopaths.

Perhaps in the future that will change. A primary difference between humans and lesser mammals is that lesser mammals have proportionately larger amygdalas (emotional centres) to their overall brain mass. They are more given to emotional responses perhaps because the reaction speed can be faster. Fright to flight.

Interestingly sociopaths have proportionately smaller amygdalas than non-sociopath humans. Perhaps instead of being "monsters" for being different and less emotional, are they possibly more evolved humans than the rest of us?

Star Trek fans have long admired the lack of emotions with which Spock and other Vulcans conduct themselves. Vulcans are guided by logic, cause-effect, risk-reward. Text-book sociopaths ! So why do people idolize the fictional race of Vulcans yet have nothing but contempt, distrust, and fear for sociopaths in the real world?

Confessions of a sociopath

This book is nothing more than a woman who likes to talk without really telling you anything, and a way for her to make money. A lot of the book contains studies done by others and research done by others. This author really is just a self important woman who's ego is way out of control. I saw her on Dr. Phil before I read the book and I thought she was just a woman with an ego that is out of control, it was confirmed in her book. Save yourself the amount of the book and use it toward something useful. Don't line her pockets like I did. Not worth the read.
