Called a “magnificently crafted story . . . brimming with wisdom” by Howard Frank Mosher in The Washington Post Book World, Crossing to Safety has, since its publication in 1987, established itself as one of the greatest and most cherished American novels of the twentieth century. Tracing the lives, loves, and aspirations of two couples who move between Vermont and Wisconsin, it is a work of quiet majesty, deep compassion, and powerful insight into the alchemy of friendship and marriage.

Crossing to Safety
Wallace Stegner has written a book that plays on every emotion, and makes the reader sit back and ponder the plight, the journey, and the mystery of this thing called life. I was amazed at how wholesome, loving and innocent this story started out, and then evolved into something very unsavoury as the four main characters in the novel aged, and became victims of nature's relentless claws. Sharing the experience that this onslaught of time brings, Stegner has woven a tale that all readers will enjoy, both for the veracity of life, but the tenderness, as well.
