Salmon Gulper ,

Becoming Comanche.

This book, dances with wolves, is far better than the movie, because it makes you feel like you're right there, laying in the grass, laying in the canyon, it's about a man's journey from US Army soldier to Comanche. You will be pulled in to the gripping scenery of the open prairie, canyons, rivers, wildlife and forests of this book. A lieutenant, by the name of John J Dunbar, got orders to go to Fort Sedgwick. He finds it abandoned, and managed poorly, with corpses of the animals killed clogging up the stream. This book, is about the restoration of his connection with nature, and becoming a Comanche warrior known as dances with wolves. We have become so civilized, that we have lost our love and connection with the natural world. As important as our phones are today, we need to take time to go outside, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy the wonders and beauty of nature. We as a civilization and society need to stop moving from box to box, because outside those doors, our natural world provides us with so many benefits, such as lower blood pressure, decreased risk of diseases such as type two diabetes, improve cognitive function, and improved immune function. This book also brings up another issue, civilization expansion. As important as our civilization is, we need to take into consideration and respect the animals were killing, and what impact we have upon the habitat that we settled upon. When the buffalo were hunted to extinction, or close to it, this killed the planes. Without the buffalo tearing up the grass, there were no prairie dogs, rattlesnakes, and many other species that depended upon the buffalo tearing up that grass. I personally believe that it is important for us in North America today, and the world, to assess what impacts we are having upon the world's ecosystems today, from the killing of the elephant, the killing of sharks, the killing of salmon, it's high time we start giving and not taking everything. As important as it is to preserve the species which are endangered, it is up to us to be the hunters of them. We are here to be balance keepers, we are here to keep the balance of nature, not disrupt it. This book will always have a special place in my heart, this book will I read once per year in November.
