Publisher Description
Raising the dead is the easy part.
It's the living who make things difficult.
Necromancy isn't about dark rituals or raising armies of the dead. It's paperwork. As a certified professional, I spend most of my time navigating regulations and raising the recently departed to settle inheritance disputes. It's a mundane job until the police bring me a case unlike anything I've handled before.
Usually, solving a murder is simple. I raise the victim, ask who did it, and let the police handle the rest. But now someone is leaving behind a trail of brutal killings and the dead aren't giving me answers.
While the investigation grows more complicated, the local vampires insist they need my help and offer a dangerous deal I can't refuse. Their secrets lead me to the Veil, where spirits rest and a mysterious castle keeps appearing.
I just want to earn enough to help my mom pay her medical bills, keep my less-than-legal work hidden from the cops, and avoid strangling one infuriatingly arrogant detective. Instead, I'm caught between a murder case, vampire politics, and a mystery buried deep within the Veil. If I can't figure out how these strange new problems connect, I'll go from making sacrifices to becoming one.
A deliciously dark urban fantasy tale with a flawed necromancer trying to survive a harsh supernatural world by international bestselling author J. C. McKenzie.

Oh my god. Just oh my god.
McKenzie did it again! This book is such a great read and is a fast read without losing key details and plotlines.
Lark is a girl with death powers that gets pulled into the world of police investigations, gruesome murders, and sexy men that know just what buttons to push to drive her senseless.
While navigating her usual office job with unusual hours, Lark is pushed by her sassy colleague, her deadly brother, and his bashful beau to open her heart to the right man for her. Too bad she either cannot follow her needs or she often finds herself drawn to guys that bring trouble her way.
Through all this, she is constantly forging forward with trying to make ends meet while paying for her mom's treatments, often finding herself wrapped into situations that are less than stellar.
And that ending! I had to reread the last chapter twice just to wrap my head around it! So many questions! You can bet, I'm buying at my bit to read the sequel!
This book has it all! From romance and passion to heartbreak and past and present traumas. Let me be absolutely honest when I say you will undoubtedly find something to love about this book.
McKenzie doesn't get as much credit as she deserves with her amazing writing and many series. If you are up for a new book, this one needs to make your tbr asap!
From one Canadian to another, thank you again for such a great book written in the Canadian context! It's a rare find and even rarer to find it done well.
I'd be shouting my recommendations from the Rockies to Green Gables!
12/10 would recommend!
