His first work was a play. During the early 1920s Hulbert Footner started writing detective stories, became of one the most famous detective authors and acquired a faithful following in America, the United Kingdom, and other countries.

In the centre of action is Madame Rosika Storey, a detective, who is called in by a society couple at Cape Cod to investigate a coercion racket.
