The nightmare comes to me in the middle of the night, during the time when I should be curled on my side, dreaming of blue skies and meadows. I feel it melt into me, like a languid outer skin, covering me whole, and then sinking into me slowly.
The house is dark and silent.
At first I think I must be trapped in a tomb, the darkness is so perfect.
I turn down a hallway, feeling the walls with my sweaty palms. I don’t know where I am, but a certain familiarity lingers and I can’t put my finger on it. It feels like something I’ve lived through, or maybe a prophetic glimpse of my future.
“Hello?” I call out. My voice echoes down the hallway.
Something pops and I turn with a gasp to see an apparition appear at the end of the hall. It is silky and transparent, casting a hazy glow of white light down the corridor. Panic rises inside of me, and I begin to tremble, starting with the small muscles in my fingers.
I watch it warily, hoping it disappears as quickly as it appeared. Everything I’ve ever read about ghosts suggests that they don’t want to be seen. This one seems to have other ideas. It begins to slowly drift towards me, growing brighter and brighter until I have to shield my eyes. The trembling moves down my body in a wave.
It’s going to be bad. Really bad.
I can feel it in my bones.
God help me.
