A dark comedy about a young man’s aspirations to be something better than he currently is.
Frustrated 35-year-old plumber Isaac Sullivan believes he has both the intellect and skill to be a surgeon. Forced to take over his father’s plumbing business straight out of high school, Isaac’s had dreams of attending the University of Michigan that fell by the wayside. However, the unfortunate setback didn’t stop him entirely. For the past decade, he has absorbed every medical textbook and journal available to him. For practical experience, Isaac performs surgeries on the wildlife around his house, preparing for the day he attends Michigan.
Yet the years continue to pass and Isaac remains stuck in Paradise, Michigan, as a plumber. That is, until this year, when an event pushes him to apply as an undergraduate for the first time. Exit Papers from Paradise is about the gap between the person we are and the person we desperately want to be.
Customer Reviews
A wonderful, wonder-filled read.
All of us have faced obstacles in life that are outside of our control and have, due to them, had a dream deferred. Few have the courage, strength and faith to once again pick up that dream and breath life into it with passion, action and love. This is the story of Isaac. Liam Card beautifully paints a vivid picture in a way that is honest, touching and extremely funny. Between the tears of laughter & pain shared with Isaac I may have even learned a lesson. A wonderful read that will take you from first page to back cover almost too quickly.
A Page-turner
WOW, this is a wonderful first novel – great story, engaging characters, evocative conversations, exceptional use of metaphor & structurally tight… interesting ‘spiritual’ component as well. Very entertaining… 'a real page-turner'.
Intriguing personal journey
As the author revealed more of Isaac’s struggles through a dialogue with his inner voice I found myself more and more disturbed and intrigued. Several times I stopped reading while I remembered similar events about a struggle to achieve personal hopes and dreams. The journey in Paradise with Isaac was at times troublesome, thought-provoking, moving. I highly recommend this book. Be ready to re-evaluate your own journey through your very own 'Paradise'. This is an engaging and unique book. A terrific read.
