Exorcising Modernizm

Is the title of this book “Exorcising Modernism,” or is it “Exercising Modernism”? In a sense, it is both, for it is intended to reflect the ambivalent attitude of the poets discussed here to the tradition of High Modernism which they challenged, but which also – undoubtedly – determined their attitudes and stylistic pursuits. In other words, the process of “exorcising modernism” cannot be regarded without taking into consideration the ways in which modernism was, and perhaps still is, “exercised” by post-war American poets.
