Great read
Chan is a talented writer, able to weave her personal journey back to her ancestor village with the larger saga of young female migrant workers on the front line of development, in factories and sprawling cities. Chan has the unique perspective of a native Chinese (able to speak mandarin and physically blend in with the crowds) and a born American. She navigates this dual cultural status well, balancing her narrative voice with factual information and personal insights into living and working as a woman in China. I enjoyed her descriptions of the relationships she builds with several migrant workers as they struggle in factories and try to carve out a better life for themselves through hard work, perseverance, and in some cases, deceit and lies. A great book that gives a personal voice to the working mass in China.
