In the summer of 1986, David Miller walked into a gas well fire in northern Alberta. Burns covered more than eighty percent of his body. Two of his coworkers did not come home.

That was the first fire.

In 2012, a stroke took his balance, his speech, and his sense of who he was. In 2023, an aortic dissection — a condition that kills most people within hours — quietly destroyed him from the inside for over one hundred hours before it was diagnosed.
